Once again, programmers and hackers and bears oh my are hard at work, filling certain holes in the Atari 2600 library. These games are not remakes, but demakes. And hot on the heels of Princess Rescue, aka Super Mario Bros, is Zippy the Porcupine, aka Sonic The Hedgehog.

Polygon reports that the following is a work in progress, which is further evidenced by the 2600 emulator front end that kicks everything off. It's also why one must hold final judgment until it’s running on actual 2600 hardware. Still, it's quite impressive:

According to the creator, via the Atari Age Forums, some concessions will obviously be necessary:

"I was originally going to have rings explode from Zippy when he got hit by an enemy but with the enemy still on screen I found it rather impossible to do, so here's my work-around. When you get hit by an enemy, the enemy "steals" your rings. To get some of them back you have to "pop" the enemy. Once the enemy goes off screen, so does the possibility to get your rings back."

Still, the speed of the game is extremely impressively. Can't wait for the entire package to be ported, though hopefully, there'll be enough ROM space to make it happen as well.
